Dental Bonding and Shaping

Dental bonding and shaping are very common cosmetic dentistry procedures. Typically, dental bonding is used to reshape misshapen teeth, or restore teeth that have been damaged by decay, cracking, or impact injuries. Additionally, dental shaping can be used to remove small amounts of enamel from misshapen teeth, correcting small abnormalities.

At Busk Family Dentistry, Dr. Ryan Busk specializes in dental bonding and shaping services that can restore your natural teeth, and provide you with a brighter, more natural smile.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic tooth restoration technique. Using an advanced dental resin, Dr. Busk can fill in gaps and chips between your teeth, create a more attractive shape, and improve the color of your teeth.

The procedure is simple and noninvasive. First, Dr. Busk will etch the surface of your tooth, providing a solid surface for the dental resin. Then, your teeth will be painted with a specialized liquid that helps the resin stick.

The dental resin will then be applied. It will be shaped and molded to create a natural, tooth-like appearance, restoring the natural shape of a damaged or misshapen tooth. Finally, a UV light is used to harden the resin permanently, and provide a solid, durable surface.

Typically, only one tooth is bonded during a single appointment, which takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete. However, treatment may differ depending on the patient.

What Is Dental Shaping?

Dental shaping is another very common cosmetic dentistry technique. In this procedure, very small amounts of enamel are removed from the teeth using a dental drill. Dental shaping is typically used alongside dental bonding to provide a comprehensive “smile makeover”. By reshaping existing teeth, and adding material to small or damaged teeth, patients can enjoy a brighter, more natural looking smile.

What Conditions Can Dental Bonding And Shaping Treat?

Dental bonding and shaping are typically only used to treat minor cosmetic dental issues such as:

However, if you have a tooth that’s been seriously damaged by an impact injury, tooth decay, or periodontal disease, you may require a more comprehensive procedure, such as the installation of a dental crown.
